Everyone has a story inside of them - waiting to be told. But for most of us it's hidden - buried beneath layers of 'borrowed' wisdom.' It's a unique and powerful story, and it needs to be told. Because in the telling of that story - the truth of who we really are is revealed. And in doing so, we unlock something within us - what I call 'Purpose' - a deeper truth about who we are and what we are here to achieve.
But here's the catch - it's chicken and egg. Do we wait for the story to emerge as a finished book, neatly bound and fresh off the printing press? The trouble with that approach is that we could be waiting a very long time for that to happen. So long in fact, that we die of old age before it's written, edited and printed.
What if we were to start with a few fragments here and there? A few words, or a few pages? It might not be the finished masterpiece - but better to start to tell your story and see where it leads, than to never tell it at all. And in the telling - the truth is revealed - so it gives you more inspiration to complete a whole chapter, and then another. And before you know it, your book is written.
How to start writing? My advice is to still your mind first - then pick up your pen, tablet, or voice recorder and start. In Stephen King's brilliant book 'On Writing' one of his best pieces of advice about how to start writing is to 'just start.'
